West Side Story-The New Broadway Cast Recording
From the first notes to the final breath, West Side Story is one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time. Recently re-opening on Broadway to critical-acclaim, West Side Story is the masterwork of three theatrical luminaries: Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim. This groundbreaking new production offers a bold new design that builds on the show's raw power and emotion and takes on new life through the inspired idea of a bilingual album and production. The Bernstein and Sondheim score considered to be one of Broadway's finest, features such classics as "Maria," "Tonight," "America," "I Feel Pretty" and "Somewhere." The musical that changed the face of American Theatre over half a century ago continues to do so, remaining as brilliant and relevant as ever.
Billy Elliot
Based on the 2000 film about a young British boy who tries to escape a future as coalminer by training in ballet, Billy Elliot--The Musical feels like an exemplary screen-to-stage adaptation, making the best use of composer Elton John's melodic resourcefulness. Fans of John's regular output need to be warned that this album is show tunes all the way and that they'd be hard-pressed to recognize the songs as usual fare by the author of "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and "Your Song." Still, they really should give the CD a chance. Fans of musical theater, on the other hand, will need no prodding. They are likely to be enchanted by this recording, which shows that John has thoroughly absorbed the genre's classic strain. The show is very catchy, with well-structured, dramatic songs and some genuine tearjerkers ("The Letter"). Sir Elton even proves he's listened to great "jazz hands" classics (some by Kander and Ebb, perhaps) on "Shine," which even requests some "ol' razzle dazzle." Teaming up not with usual lyricist Bernie Taupin but with the film's screenwriter, Lee Hall (and its director, Stephen Daldry), John has written a lovely stage score, as evidenced on this recording of the London cast. Note that John himself performs three songs from the show on a bonus CD. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Tennessee Williams' Dragon Country (Broadway Theatre Archive) [VHS]
Producer-director Glenn Jordan brought together two Tennessee Williams plays, written twenty years apart, that examine the theme of isolation with searching clarity. The joint presentation, entitled "Dragon Country," features the world premiere of "I Can't Imagine Tomorrow," starring Kim Stanley and William Redfield, and a much earlier work, "Talk to Me Like the Rain and Let Me Listen," starring Lois Smith and Alan Mixon. Together, the dramas delve into "a land of endured but unendurable pain, where each one is so absorbed, deafened, blinded by his own journey across it, he sees, he looks for, no one else crawling across it with him."
Death of a Salesman (Broadway Theatre Archive) [VHS]
"Attention must be paid" to this abbreviated but superb 1966 television adaptation by Arthur Miller of his Pulitzer Prize-winning modern tragedy, starring the incomparable Lee J. Cobb and Mildred Dunnock recreating their original Broadway roles as the Lomans. In a career-defining performance, Cobb portrays the suffering Willy Loman--the middle-aged man at the end of his emotional rope--with Dunnock equally impressive as his patient wife, Linda. George Segal and James Farentino play their disillusioned sons, Biff and Happy. Shattering and unforgettable, this landmark television production has been digitally remastered and will endure for all generations to come. "In a word, superb." --New York Times. With Gene Wilder as Bernard.
The Rimers of Eldritch (Broadway Theatre Archive) [VHS]
An ensemble cast and deft editing bring this haunting Lanford Wilson piece to life. The Rimers of Eldritch is set in a dying Midwestern town, and in many ways the town itself is the central character. The plot radiates outward from a trial, and the action shifts back and forth in time as we piece together what happened. The scenes are brief, often lasting just long enough to give a quick impression before moving on, and the dialogue is cleverly overlapped. Wilson uses these shreds of action and thought both to carefully add information about the violence that has happened and to dissect the community (viewers may be reminded of Twin Peaks more than once). The ensemble cast, including a young Susan Sarandon, is uniformly good, though Rue McClanahan is a standout. McClanahan's character, Cora, seems simple at first, but as the piece continues she expertly shades her with rich layers. --Ali Davis
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Donny Osmond stars as Joseph in Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Biblical Broadway extravaganza, shimmering with elaborately-staged production numbers and a score full of hits.
